The Subspecialty Department of Plastic Surgery is an independent educational group under the Faculty of Medicine. The plastic surgery training program is one of the most critical and fundamental clinical experiences for plastic surgery subspecialty fellows. During this period, fellows are expected to begin learning and acquiring proficiency in many core and foundational plastic surgery skills. This program is primarily based on scientific and practical training in a hospital setting (subspecialty clinics, plastic surgery wards, and operating rooms). Based on this need, the Plastic Surgery Subspecialty Department at Shahid Beheshti University of Medical Sciences, Tehran, was established in 1991 (1370) by Dr. Jamal Ghousheh and Dr. Parviz Mafi, with the support of the then-university president, Dr. Fereydoun Azizi. It began its scientific, educational, and clinical activities at the Masih Daneshvari Educational and Treatment Center. In 1995 (1374), this department was transferred to the 15 Khordad Educational and Treatment Center. Currently, the department consists of 9 faculty members ranging from assistant professors to full professors. The first subspecialty fellow was accepted in 1993 (1372), and from 1998 (1377), the intake increased to 2 fellows per year. Since 1999 (1378), one or two hand surgery fellowship students have been accepted and trained annually. In 2005 (1384), the number of accepted plastic surgery subspecialty fellows reached 4, and from 2010 (1389), this number increased to 7 per year. The department also accepts fellows from universities in other provinces for one-year rotations. Upon graduation, these fellows join scientific, educational, and clinical centers across the country to provide medical services to the community. The department maintains scientific and educational collaborations with other departments to enhance interdisciplinary coordination, working together to educate fellows and treat patients. Currently, the main location of this department is at the 15 Khordad Educational and Treatment Center, located on Karim Khan Zand Street, Shahid Azodi Street. This center operates as a teaching hospital and includes various units and departments, such as plastic surgery (maxillofacial, hand and microsurgery, and burns), surgical operating rooms, laboratories, radiology, sonography, a library, audiovisual services, and specialty clinics (plastic surgery, maxillofacial, cleft lip/palate and craniofacial anomalies, hand and microsurgery, aesthetics and burns, cardiology, internal medicine, infectious diseases, emergency, and ICU).
